My Spontaneous Trip to Zihuatanejo, Mexico

When I say spontaneous… I mean it.

Ok, first things first, this trip was completely unplanned. I booked my ticket less than 8 hours before the flight was supposed to take off… how is that for spontaneous? But that is what made the trip even more fun! Sometimes you need to just pick up and go.

A quote I heard recently and has stuck with me was “Your life isn’t a trial run, go live it.”  I know it sounds silly, but it reminded me not to take things too seriously and enjoy the moment and any opportunity that is thrown my way. You never know what is going to happen each day and who knows, you could be on a flight to Mexico! SO embrace opportunities, enjoy life and jump on a flight when you have the urge –  suggestions from a travel addict.

I have been going to Zihuatanejo since I was about 8 years old with my family. We own a little cottage on the coast, however, for this trip, I stayed at Villa Del Sol. This hotel used to be called the Viceroy, but recently changed ownership and is now Villa Del Sol and part of Destination Hotels management. Located on Playa La Ropa in Zihuatanejo, this beach is home to mainly locals. This is one of the few beaches that is not lined with high rises and still has that authentic feel to it.

How to Get Here

The flights to Zihuatanejo are super easy from LA! It is only about a 3-and-a-half-hour flight from LAX direct to ZIH on Alaska Airlines. The perfect getaway for a week or even a weekend. Once you land at ZIH airport you are pretty close to the main hotels, restaurants and beaches. The taxi ride to Villa Del Sol from the airport is only 15 -20 minutes.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at Villa Del Sol, a luxury hotel directly on La Ropa Beach. Nestled between hundreds of yellow and green palm trees, this beach hideaway is the perfect place to escape from your busy life for a week. The hotel offers several different room accommodations including family style, beach suites, jungle style suites and presidential suites.  I stayed in one of the beach suites located right on the sand with direct views to the water.

For anyone looking to stay at Villa Del Sol, I strongly suggest requesting Beach Suite #4. It is the most private/quiet of all the beach suites and is newly renovated.

The food at Villa Del Sol is hard to beat as well. You can choose from a diverse lunch menu with options ranging from Japanese sushi, traditional Mexican to fresh fish hamburgers grilled in front of you. Don't forget to get a drink from (in my opinion) the best mixologist in Mexico! He goes by "Flaco" and can make some of the most delicious drinks I have ever tasted. My personal favorite is called Cucumber Kiss.
